About LemonBee Co.
“The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease for ever to be able to do it.”
― J. M. Barrie, Peter Pan
Sometimes I like to pretend that I was named after that Jane Austen book, or possibly the brilliant woman that brought the likeness of Hermione Granger to the movie screens, but most of the time I like to pretend I was the first Emma to exist. Emma is derived from the Germanic word ermen meaning "whole" or "universal" and I sure can tell you a whole lot about Universal Studios. As far as locations go, Universal Studios holds a very special place in my heart, second only to Disneyland. While most people were out in Vegas or just bars in general, I spent my 21st birthday at Disneyland and I feel like that tells you a lot about me on its own. Besides being an avid theme park goer, I also enjoy watching movies, playing video games, snuggling with my dogs, cooking, and attempting to garden.
Growing up I always felt like the artistic kid that wasn’t good at art. I enjoyed singing, dancing, participating in school theater productions, and even writing my own short stories, but I couldn’t draw to save my life. I also played softball for a large portion of my life, along with cross country. I really just wanted to try as many things as I could. My mothers side of the family is very artistic as well. My grandmother sewed and made the most gorgeous quilts I have ever seen and passed the sewing gene to my mother! She doesn’t just sew though, she also does stain glass and is even talented at wood work! I liked watching my mom sew when I was a kid but I definitely didn’t have the attention span to sew anything from start to finish. Over the past few years, I’ve watched so many sewing videos on YouTube and I got so inspired and just had to start creating again in some form or another. In December of 2019, my amazing husband gifted me a sewing machine for my birthday and I have pretty much sat in front of it everyday since.
The first thing that was made with it was a simple scrunchie. I posted about it on Instagram and suddenly there was about 15 people messaging me asking if I could make them one as well. I was just thrilled that not only did people enjoy what I had made, but that they wanted to spend their hard earned money so that they could own something that I made. That’s how it all started. A single scrunchie. In early January I decided that I wanted to make my own little shop on Etsy so maybe people all over the country could get some of my scrunchies. But you can’t have a shop without a name, right? The name ‘LemonBee’ came from simply combining two of my favorite things, bees and lemons. I also love sunflowers, can you tell my favorite color is yellow? With that, LemonBee Co. was launched on January 16th, 2020 and since then I have made and sold over 1,000 scrunchies and have shipped orders to over 25 different states as well as Canada and Australia.
